Orpheus & the Raven Swansong

This wine packaging design of Orpheus & the Raven Swansong tells the story of the swansong of the vines simply known as A11, which were uprooted in June 2016. This is the third wine packaging design in the range of Orpheus & the Raven wine range developed for The Vinoneers.

The wine label is completed hand-drawn and depicts a scene that has baroque undertones with modern twists. The illustration is inspired by the etchings of Albrecht Dürer, one of the grand masters. The same approach was followed where each elaborate scene tells a story with cues of symbolism that is hidden within.

“The silver Swan, who living had no note, when death approached, unlocked her silent throat. Leaning her breast against the reedy shore, thus sang her first and last, and sang no more.” – Orlando Gibbons – 1612

The grapes were hand-picked in the cool morning hours at a minimum of 23 degree Balling. Due to the age of the 36 years old vines, the bunches did not ripen evenly and subsequently the block was harvested in two stages. The juice was cold-fermented with VIN 13 at 11 degrees celcius. Extended lees maturation, enhanced by an autolytic enzyme, was allowed for 8 months prior to bottling on 16/11/2016.
